Bulkhead Repair
The next phase of the restoration project we completed was to shore up the bulkhead which protects the mill’s stone foundation. We are currently raising money to conduct ongoing maintenance of the dam. This important work will allow us to preserve the mill which is considered one of the best preserved eighteenth century tide mills in the United States.
The completion of this major restoration project was made possible by a $52,700 matching grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. The work focused on repairing the mill’s deteriorating bulkhead and restoring its original weir gate, both of which are essential to preserving the structural and environmental integrity of this nationally significant site.
“This project was essential to protecting the structural integrity of the mill itself,” said Peter Chase, President of Lefferts Tide Mill & Preserve. “The bulkhead stabilizes the foundation of the mill against erosion, while the restored weir gate allows us to regulate tidal flow into the dam—reducing long-term wear and preserving the system as a whole. The Gardiner Foundation’s support was instrumental in making this possible.”
We are currently raising funds to repair the bulkhead.
